Storycraft: Telling Tales of Adventure with Tabletop Games (adults and kids 12 & up)

  • Macoupin Art Collective 214 E. Main St. Staunton, IL 62093 USA (map)

Explore common elements, tropes, and archetypes found in heroic tales of adventure through the medium of tabletop games. With guidance from your instructor, and in cooperation with your fellow students, you will learn the basic rules for a tabletop game (board game, card game, roleplaying game), and use that framework to weave a collaborative story about a band of heroes who overcome obstacles and challenges with teamwork and skill.
This workshop is designed to be improvisational, tailored to the specific students in attendance and their interests. Stories could be from any genre, including science-fiction, fantasy, adventure, super heroes, etc. This workshop focuses on collaborative gameplay, but will touch on many skill sets and artistic media, like creative writing, illustration, graphic design, publishing, and so on. The stories told could be adapted to fit (or inspired by) any sort of popular media, from comic books and prose to television shows and movies. Not only will you learn to play a game, you will learn what makes a great game or a great story, and you may even learn a bit about designing your own games or writing your own heroic tales.
