5-week Intermediate Clay Basics: Sculpting Portraiture in Clay

Do you have your basics in clay down and now looking to advance your skills and take your ideas and projects to the next level? Miss Ruthie will teach students the basics of sculpting with clay. Students will learn different sculpting techniques working from photo references or imagination; how to use a variety of clay tools; how to apply different finishes to clay surfaces; and gain an understanding of clay and its properties. Each student will make several projects throughout this 5-week course, and will glaze as we go. Students are encouraged to bring along their ideas for projects, and notebooks/sketchbooks for note taking and sketching out ideas. Notebooks/sketchbooks are not required, the MAC has plenty of paper to use for these purposes.

Relaxing Basic Embroidery Stitches Practice for Beginners

Need a new granny hobby? Have you wanted to try a new medium, but are afraid to invest in new materials? Here’s a chance to practice without the commitment. Come hang out with Miss Ruthie and experiment, practice, and learn some basic embroidery stitches. Each student will get an embroidery hoop with fabric for your experiments and practice. If you came to make a stitch book with Miss Ruthie in the 8/14 class bring that along with you to practice too! This session will start with some exercises together, and then will open up to practice on your own. Students will leave with their embroidery hoop and knowledge they gain through playing and experimentation, which most of us don’t really make the time to do. Students are encouraged to bring snacks, drinks, or whatever else needed to help you get comfortable and relaxed while making art.

Let’s embrace grandma hobbies, and have a practice book ready to practice your embroidery skills through the fall and winter! This class is ONLY to make the practice book. Ruthie will have a basic embroidery stitches class on 9/18 if you would like to come back to practice some basics. Each student will leave class with one embroidery book. Ex Librus One Shot Class

In this class students will create their own Ex Librus stamps. Ex Libris is latin for “the library of”, so students can creat their own custom stamp to add to their personal books, collected or made! These stamps will be created using a printmaking technique, where students will create their own designs and cut them into linoleum. The linoleum can then be pressed into some ink and then added to the insides of books!

Come join me for this super simple yet fun Halloween project! In this class we will be making Ghosts using a soft slab ceramic technique! Students will roll out slabs and we will be draping them over a form. While I slabs stiffen and dry up, we can carve out whatever faces we would like our ghost to have! After our faces are carved out, you can jazz up your ghosts by sculpting a hat or a pumpkin. At the end of the class, students will glaze their ghosts and then in two weeks, students can come pick up their new Halloween decoration! They look great on the mantle and/ or with a pho candle underneath!

Hello witches and warlocks! Come join me in this simple Halloween project! In this class, students will be using clay to create their own caldrons using the pinching process. In this class Students will have two balls of clay to pinch out bowl shapes. Once our shapes are formed, we will add little feet and handles to our pieces. After construction, we will color our caldrons using underglaze. Then the pieces will fired and students can take home their new Halloween decorations in two weeks!

In this workshop, Melissa will teach the basics of bookbinding. You’ll learn a hand-sewn binding technique and build each journal with 100 pages, giving you one page per day across all four books.

Materials to bring for the class include a sketchbook or regular paper, plus old magazines or decorative papers for the covers. Throughout the session, you’ll learn how to design and assemble your own book covers, tear down paper, punch stitching holes, weave the covers and spine together, and sew in the pages to complete your unique books.

A creative, hands-on way to start the year with something truly your own!

Learn the art of bookbinding in a relaxed, hands-on, 5‑week class at The Macoupin Art Collective. You’ll explore simple tools and techniques to create your own custom journals and sketchbooks from start to finish.

In this 5 week bookbinding class students will explore 4 different types of bookbinding: Coptic, Secret Belgian, Ribbon Binding, and Paper Bag Books. This craft will teach students various ways to hand-sew their own book. Each week, students will learn how to make their own book covers, tear down paper, punch holes and sew together it all together to create their personalized books!

Students are encouraged to bring old magazines or fun paper for the covers of their books! No experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to experiment. Leave with finished books you’re proud to use, gift, or display.

DIY Home: Ceramic Pinch-pot Snack Trays

Miss Ruthie will teach students how to create a ceramic snack tray and spoon to enjoy all the delicious treats summer has to offer. Show off your new trays at your next summer picnic with friends. Students will learn simple handbuilding/pinching techniques, simple glaze techniques, how to use a variety of clay tools, and gain an understanding of clay and its properties. Each student will make at least one tray and one spoon in class, and will decorate and glaze for a once-fire. Students are encouraged to bring snacks and drinks to the class and relax while making art.

Buckle up, Book People!! Teresa will be teaching a class on how to make tiny book earrings! In this class, we will be taking book board and cutting them into small pieces and wrapping them with fun paper. We will also be cutting down little strips of paper to sew into our tiny books. After they are punched and sewn together, we will add jump rings and earring hooks to finish off our own tiny book earrings!

This three week class will incorporate class time and studio time. Students will be invited to bring in their own pattern and glass. Materials will be provided for those who want- but we might not have the exact color of blue you are hoping for. Students will work with Brandace for 2 hours a week. But students are encouraged to use the studio to work on their piece outside of our class time.

Join us for an immersive 6-week course where we’ll dive deep into the art of wheel throwing! From learning the fundamental physics of centering your clay to shaping, trimming, and applying your own beautiful glazes, this course is designed to take you from a complete beginner to a confident maker. Expect plenty of lumpy pots, goofy bowls, and a whole lot of creative fun along the way!

Over the six weeks, you will build a collection of your very own handmade pieces. Once your hard work has been dried, fired, and glazed, you'll have a stunning set of functional art to take home and show off.

DIY Journals

In this workshop, Melissa will teach the basics of bookbinding. You’ll learn a hand-sewn binding technique and build each journal with 100 pages, giving you one page per day across all four books.

Materials to bring for the class include a sketchbook or regular paper, plus old magazines or decorative papers for the covers. Throughout the session, you’ll learn how to design and assemble your own book covers, tear down paper, punch stitching holes, weave the covers and spine together, and sew in the pages to complete your unique books.

A creative, hands-on way to start the year with something truly your own!
